Surgical Information

Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery, also termed Otorhinolaryngology, is the branch of surgery that focuses on conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, base of the skull, and certain conditions of the head and neck. It is a speciality that combines various surgical techniques and procedures, to culminate in a broad spectrum of diagnoses.

This page offers important information on various surgical procedures performed by Dr. Mol at his practice. Take the time to read about your procedure before your surgery.

Otosclerosis and Stapedectomy

Otosclerosis is a disease causing conductive hearing loss by immobilising the stapes bone in the middle ear. A stapedectomy is a highly successful outpatient surgical procedure to remove this bone and replace it with a prosthetic device to restore sound conduction to the inner ear.

Tympanoplasty

Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair a perforated eardrum or damaged middle ear bones, often caused by chronic infections or injury. It involves grafting, typically using tissue from behind the ear, to close the hole, aiming to restore hearing and prevent infection.

Grommets

Grommets are tiny plastic or metal tubes inserted into the eardrum (tympanostomy) to treat chronic fluid buildup or frequent infections, typically in children, allowing the middle ear to drain and ventilate.

Cholesteotoma

A cholesteatoma is an abnormal, noncancerous skin growth in the middle ear, usually behind the eardrum, resulting from chronic ear infections or Eustachian tube dysfunction. It forms a destructive cyst that can erode hearing bones and surrounding structures, leading to hearing loss, dizziness, and chronic drainage.
